Various celebrations are also part of everyday life in the general upper secondary school. First-year students at Kitee Upper Secondary School celebrate the commencement of their studies together with students from Tohmajärvi Upper Secondary School. Other special days during the academic year include Wanhojen päivä [Seniors’ Day] and Penkkarit. Wanhojen päivä takes place when (typically) second-year students become school seniors after third-year students stop attending school at the start of the matriculation examination period. This is usually marked by a special ball. Penkkarit refers to a celebration taking place during senior students’ final day of school before the start of the matriculation examination period. Graduation Day celebrations take place both in the autumn and in the spring.
